Sujata Samir Koltekar, also known as Riya, is a resilient individual born in Chapora, Goa.
Riya encountered the harsh realities of life early on when her mother left, leading to her adoption by loving parents. Riya’s adoptive parents provided her with care and affection, fostering her growth until the 7th grade. However, her journey took a challenging turn when she entered an abusive marriage at the age of 19, enduring physical and mental torment from her husband.
In the face of these difficulties, Riya’s sister, Farida, and Project Três’s leader, Carla, played key roles in helping her break free from the shackles of her troubled past. Through the project, Riya not developed further her skills, but also rediscovered her passion for cooking and embroidery, earning a modest income and gaining confidence to face the world.
Despite the persistent challenges, including financial struggles and the trauma of domestic violence, Riya found solace in the inspiring environment of Project Três. Carla's mentorship became a beacon of hope, teaching Riya not only practical skills but also instilling in her a sense of self-worth. This newfound confidence motivated her to take on multiple jobs, including cooking in someone's house, and eventually, she became proficient in handling computer-related tasks.
As Riya’s life unfolded, she faced the complexities of a toxic marriage, involving domestic violence and adultery, which Carla helped her navigate by offering guidance on avoiding her abusive husband. Over time, Riya managed to secure a job as a chef in a restaurant, despite having no formal experience, and took on the responsibilities of rent, childcare, and even learned to ride a bike for transportation.
Project Três not only provided Riya with a source of income (optional: 40 euros per month) but also became a source of emotional support and companionship. The community within the project allowed Riya to open up about her struggles, providing a balance between work and play that was impossible to recreate at home. Through shared experiences, the women at the project formed a close-knit bond, offering each other understanding and motivation, a stark contrast to the strict atmosphere at home.
Riya's journey reflects a transformation from a life filled with hardship and abuse to one of resilience, independence, and hope. Despite enduring continued challenges, including ongoing abuse and financial struggles, she managed to build her own house during the lockdown, providing a stable home for her family.
It’s not like Riya’s problems are over. But today she finds herself in a much more confident and hopeful place. Through the support of Project Três, Farida and Carla's mentorship, she found the strength to envision and work towards a brighter future.
Her story is one of triumph over adversity, fueled by her determination to create a better life for herself and her daughters.
Who wouldn't want to leave a better world for their children?
